  1. INIS Activities - India Dr K. Bhanumurthy INIS Liaison OfficerScientific Information Resource DivisionBhabha Atomic Research Centre, Mumbai, INDIA E-mail: headsird@barc.gov.in • Outline • Activities • Experiences • Challenges & Concerns • Future prospects 1

  2. INIS Database centers 2

  3. INIS Activities Working Staff 5 fulltime and 1 part-time Sources 60 Indian journals (20 regularly scanned core journals) 98 conference proceedings Average input per year 1850 records Indian input 3

  4. INIS Activities Indian Core Journals Indian inputs: subject-wise • Pramana • Radiation-Protection-and-Environment • Journal-of-Medical-Physics • Indian-Journal-of-Radiation-Research • Indian-Journal-of-Physics-and-Proceedings-of-the-Indian-Association-for-the-Cultivation-of-Science • Environmental-Geochemistry • Exploration-and-Research-for-Atomic-Minerals • Journal-of-Nuclear-Agriculture-and-Biology • Current-Science-Bangalore • Bulletin-of-Materials-Science • Indian-Journal-of-Pure-and-Applied-Physics • Journal-of-the-Geological-Society-of-India • Chemical-and-Environmental-Research • Indian-Journal-of-Power-and-River-Valley-Development • Indian-Journal-of-Theoretical-Physics • Journal-of-the-Indian-Chemical-Society • Indian-Journal-of-Chemistry.-Section-A:-Inorganic,-Bio-inorganic,-Physical,-Theoretical-and-Analytical-Chemistry • Indian-Journal-of-Environmental-Protection • Indian-Journal-of-Engineering-and-Materials-Sciences • Proceedings-National-Academy-of-Sciences,-India.-Section-A,-Physical-Sciences 4

  5. Promotional programmes • INIS DVDs are made available to scientists & engineers of BARC through ‘Saraswati’, the campus-wide Local Area Network. • Demo-Cum-Training on INIS Database to BARC Scientists and Engineers. • Distribution of INIS Brochures and promotional materials at conferences. • Arranging INIS DB demonstration at various conferences. • Nita Bhaskar, INIS Section, India had been deputed as instructor for training programmes on setting up INIS Inputting Centers held at NECSA, South Africa in 2009. INIS Trainees from Kenya with INIS staff, India 5

  6. R&D Activities using INIS Database Areas of scientometric studies using INIS Database Neutron Activation Analysis Fuel cells Mass spectrometry Web resources Analytical chemistry Bhabha scattering Vacuum science Cobalt-60 Waste Management Seismology Thorium Timeliness of the INIS Database Top 20 Highly Productive Countries in Nuclear Science and Technology India’s rank among Asian countries is 4 Among the Indian nuclear scientists & engineers working on thorium, 64.63% are DAE Community and rest of them are from IITs, Universities, Colleges and other scientific institutions. Timeliness is a big concern on Indian inputs. An extensive study on the Timeliness of the whole INIS Database is carried out. The paper is in press of International Journal of Nuclear Knowledge Management . 6

  7. R&D Activities using INIS Database Publications on Thorium in INIS Database Indian Publications on Thorium in Journals • The period between 1980-89 saw leap in publications world over. • India’s contribution in this decade is an impressive 17.9% of the world contribution • In recent years, however, there has been a resurgence of interest in the use of thorium for a modernized version of the nuclear fuel cycle hence a climb in publications. 7

  8. R&D Activities using INIS Database Year-wise average records inputting time-lag INIS database during 1970-2008 The overall average time-lag of INIS Database is 19.23 months Papers presented by BARC scientists and engineers • Proposal for study using records in INIS database on: • ITER Project • Nuclear Fuels 8

  9. Challenges and Concerns • Collection of literature • Conferences • Journal (print/online/open sources) • Books/Monographs • Technical reports • Timeliness • 28.56 % of India’s last 10 years inputs are sent in the same year of their publication year and rest of the 52.57% have only a maximum of 12 months delay • Accuracy (Confidence level 99.0%) • Database Usage Statistics (Data from Local Intranet Servers) • Staff training is needed especially assigning several categories and keywords • DVD v/s On-Line version of the database • Records with partial information is found in DVD version but is available in On-Line version • Document delivery and requests 9

  10. Future Prospects • Expand avenues • Promotional programmes at various research centers, universities etc. • Selective Dissemination of Information • Senior scientists & engineers working on reactor engineering, waste management, materials production and development etc. • INIS DB Demo at conferences/symposia • INIS DB Usage Survey– questionnaire • Advertisements in various conferences proceedings (DAE-BRNS)/journals/magazines 10
