Starter Activities • - say and mime a weather phrase which pupils match to a picture. • - repeat weather phrases (without the mime) and match to a picture. • - Quel temps fait-il? Guessing game – show list of weather phrases and pupils have to guess which matches with the picture that you are holding. Spring into Action with Primary Languages 09.03.10
Quel temps fait-il? • Il fait chaud. • Il fait froid. • Il fait beau. • Il fait mauvais • Il pleut. • Il neige. • Il y a du soleil. • Il y a du vent. • Il y a du brouillard. • Il y a des nuages. Spring into Action with Primary Languages 09.03.10
Teaching Activities 1 Linking the seasons to the weather • Display pictures representing the 4 seasons. • Describe the pictures using seasons and weather phrases. • Ask the pupils to use visual and aural clues to work out the meanings in English. Spring into Action with Primary Languages 09.03.10
2 Practising longer phrases • Children repeat the seasons and invent a mime for each one. • Mime a season and ask ‘C’estquellesaison?’ (What season is it?) • Mime a weather phrase and children suggest a season. • A child mimes the season and a weather phrase. 3 Word Challenge • Before showing the written word challenge the children to spell the words ‘été’, ‘vent’ and ‘chaud’. Spring into Action with Primary Languages 09.03.10

4 Sentence Building • Display the written words for seasons and practise the pronunciation. (Highlight use of ‘auprintemps’ for spring and the silent ‘h’ in hiver. Also note that the ‘n’ in en is emphasised in front of the vowels and silent ‘h’) • Display the weather phrases and model how to build sentences using the seasons and weather • Ask the children to read the sentences aloud and mime the meaning. 5 Pair work sentence building • Children build sentences using text cards. • Select several pairs of children to read out their sentences. Spring into Action with Primary Languages 09.03.10
6 Developing the written word. • Play ‘Essuyez le tableau’ • Write 6 numbered phrases on the board using weather and seasons. • Roll a die, allow the pupils to study that phrase and then cover the phrase that matches the number on the die. • A volunteer comes out to write the missing phrase from memory. • Reveal the phrase and if correct remove from the list. • The aim is to remove all the phrases from the list. Extension activities • Play ‘essuyez le tableau’ in pairs by writing 6 phrases on mini-whiteboards • Use sentence packs with simple connectives to extend sentences e.g En hiver il fait froid et il neige. Spring into Action with Primary Languages 09.03.10
Follow up activities • Create a display where children build sentences using text cards. • Compare the climate in England and France. • Prepare a presentation on the weather in England and/or France during the different seasons • Collect weather data from the Internet and investigate weather from around the world.
