We don’t want to hurt our own economy. We may not have suffered damage like the French but – Germany must pay for all of the widows, orphans, and men unable to work because of injuries United States • Let’s not destroy Germany – we need a trading partner • They should pay for the damage that they caused • This is a European problem

War Guilt Part VIII. Article 231 "Guilt Clause" or the "War Guilt Clause", The Allied and Associated Governments affirm and Germany accepts the responsibility of Germany and her allies for causing all the loss and damage to which the Allied and Associated Governments and their nationals have been subjected as a consequence of the war imposed upon them by the aggression of Germany and her allies. Military restrictions Part V of the treaty begins with the preamble , "In order to render possible the initiation of a general limitation of the armaments of all nations, Germany undertakes strictly to observe the military, naval and air clauses which follow."[11] • German armed forces will number no more than 100,000 troops, and conscription will be abolished. • Enlisted men will be retained for at least 12 years; officers to be retained for at least 25 years. • German naval forces will be limited to 15,000 men, 6 battleships (no more than 10,000 tons displacement each), 6 cruisers (no more than 6,000 tons displacement each), 12 destroyers (no more than 800 tons displacement each) and 12 torpedo boats (no more than 200 tons displacement each). No submarines are to be included. • The import and export of weapons is prohibited. • Poison gas, armed aircraft, tanks and armoured cars are prohibited. • Blockades on ships are prohibited. • Restrictions on the manufacture of machine guns (e.g. the Maxim machine gun) and rifles (e.g. Gewehr 98 rifles).
Over seas Colonies Article 22. Certain communities formerly belonging to the Turkish Empire have reached a stage of development where their existence as independent nations can be provisionally recognised subject to the rendering of administrative advice and assistance by a Mandatory [i.e., a Western power] until such time as they are able to stand alone. The wishes of these communities must be a principal consideration in the selection of the Mandatory. Article 119. Germany renounces in favor of the Principal Allied and Associated Powers all her rights and titles over her overseas possessions
Compare and/or Contrast the Treaty of Versailles with the Congress of Vienna Why do you think the victors were tougher on Germany than they were on France? The Congress of Vienna lead to a pro-longed period of peace, we know that the Treaty of Versailles will not have the same success. Why do you think the Treaty could not prevent a future war?
