  1. Woe to the Proud Habakkuk 2:6-14 Key Word: Woe

  2. Habakkuk 2:6-14 Shall not all these take up their taunt against him, with scoffing and riddles for him, and say, "Woe to him who heaps up what is not his own—for how long?—and loads himself with pledges!” Will not your debtors suddenly arise, and those awake who will make you tremble? Then you will be spoil for them. Because you have plundered many nations, all the remnant of the peoples shall plunder you, for the blood of man and violence to the earth, to cities and all who dwell in them.

  3. "Woe to him who gets evil gain for his house, to set his nest on high, to be safe from the reach of harm! You have devised shame for your house by cutting off many peoples; you have forfeited your life. For the stone will cry out from the wall, and the beam from the woodwork respond. "Woe to him who builds a town with blood and founds a city on iniquity! Behold, is it not from the Lord of hosts that peoples labor merely for fire, and nations weary themselves for nothing? For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea.

  4. A great principle of history: Mankind divided into two groups: proud and arrogant and those who are righteous by faith. • 1 Peter 5:5 – God says he resists the proud and gives grace to the humble. • Jeremiah 17:5-8 - Thus says the Lord: "Cursed is the man who trusts in man and makes flesh his strength, whose heart turns away from the Lord… "Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord, whose trust is the Lord. He is like a tree planted by water… for [he] does not cease to bear fruit."

  5. 2:6 - Shall not all these take up their taunt against him, with scoffing and riddles for him, and say, • What is a woe? An expression of grief, sorrow, misery, heavy calamity. Often a curse. It is a common utterance of someone in a prophetic office against a king, a group of people or a nation. • Woe #1 – Woe for excessive greed • Woe #2 –Woe for relying on wealth and treasure for protection • Woe #3 – Woe for violence and injustice

  6. Taunt #1 – By your victim you will be victimized • V. 6-8 - Woe to him who heaps up what is not his own—for how long?—and loads himself with pledges!” Will not your debtors suddenly arise, and those awake who will make you tremble? Then you will be spoil for them. Because you have plundered many nations, all the remnant of the peoples shall plunder you, for the blood of man and violence to the earth, to cities and all who dwell in them. • The first taunt: Speaks to excessive greed. • “Live by the sword will die by the sword.” • Selfish ambition (greed) consumes.

  7. Taunt #2 – By Your Own Works You Will Be Ashamed • V. 9-11 - "Woe to him who gets evil gain for his house, to set his nest on high, to be safe from the reach of harm!10 You have devised shame for your house by cutting off many peoples; you have forfeited your life.11 For the stone will cry out from the wall, and the beam from the woodwork respond. • Relying on wealth and treasure for protection. • Proverbs 29:23 - One's pride will bring him low, but he who is lowly in spirit will obtain honor. • Proverbs 16:18 - Pride goes before destruction, and a haughty spirit before a fall. • Proverbs 15:25 - 25 The Lord tears down the house of the proud but maintains the widow's boundaries.

  8. Taunt #3 – Woe For Violence and Injustice • V. 12-14 - "Woe to him who builds a town with blood and founds a city on iniquity!13 Behold, is it not from the Lord of hosts that peoples labor merely for fire, and nations weary themselves for nothing?14 For the earth will be filled with the knowledge of the glory of the Lord as the waters cover the sea. • Your efforts will be in vain. • What man builds without God will never last. What God builds lasts for eternity.

  9. Isaiah 55:1 – “Come everyone who thirsts, come to the waters…Why do you spend your money for that which in not bread, and your labor for that which does not satisfy?...Seek the Lord while he may be found; call upon him while he is near; let the wicked forsake his way, and the unrighteous man his thoughts; let him return to the Lord, that he may have compassion on him, and to our God, for he will abundantly pardon.”

  10. Four Application Questions • 1. Are you discouraged in the corner you are in? • 2. Are you focusing on the problems around you or the God who is in control? • 3. Do you struggle with self-sufficiency? • 4. Are you and I as conscious as we should be for the glory of God?
