First Science Friday (11 Sept 09) • Warm-up Question: There are 12 things in a dozen and 12 dozen in a gross. How many pencils do you have if you have 100 gross of pencils? • Today • Collect safety sheets (signed page only – please keep the contract rules) • Homework discussion • Unit conversion review • Please make sure you have a composition book by MONDAY!!
Surviving the Lecture • Answer questions (please raise your hand if you want to share an answer) • Some other thoughts?
Unit conversion by Dimensional Analysis • There are lots of ways to set up a conversion problem – but I only favor one system that works like this: • Take your QUANTITY and write it over 1 • Multiply by a conversion factor with your UNIT in the denominator • Continue until you have the unit you want in the numerator
Some examples • How many reams of paper do you have if you have 5000 sheets of paper? (1 ream = 500 sheets) • If there are 36 inches in a yard and 1760 yards in a mile, how many inches are in 10 miles? • With a twist --What is your speed in mi/hr if you are travelling at a rate of 20 m/s
And reminders… • Need a flash drive? $10 by next Friday • Need a AP Review Book? $15 ASAP • Composition Books Monday • Science Safety sheets (if you forgot)
