Oxygen Transport • Oxygen is transported from the lungs by the hemoglobin in the red blood cells • Hemoglobin – iron containing protein • Oxygen attaches to the iron atoms in hemoglobin • Oxygen is loosely held and the reaction is reversible depending on O2 concentration O2 + hemoglobinOxyhemoglobin Reaction 1 occurs in the lungs blood low in O2 is dark red or dull purple Reaction 2 occurs in the tissues blood rich in O2 is bright red 1 2

Carbon Dioxide Transport • CO2 is poisonous to the body and must be removed • CO2 is transported in 4 ways: • 45% of CO2 in the blood plasma combines with H20 to form carbonic acid CO2 + H20 H2CO3 Reaction 1 occurs in the lungs Reaction 2 occurs in the tissues 2. (25%) H2CO3 quickly breaks down (ionizes) forming H+ and HCO3- 1 2
