Wednesday February 22nd Fredrick Douglass Independence Day quote • In an eventful speech, “What to the Slave Is the Fourth of July?” (1852), Douglass states "Your high independence only reveals the immeasurable distance between us. The blessings in which you this day rejoice are not enjoyed in common. The rich inheritance of justice, liberty, prosperity, and independence bequeathed by your fathers is shared by you, not by me. . . . This Fourth of July is yours, not mine. You may rejoice, I must mourn." Douglass speaks of the state of slaves before the Civil War and emancipation. Think about the relevance of the statement today.

  3. In response to the quote • Write a persuasive paragraph in which you agree or disagree with its relevance to the conditions of peoples around the world. Be sure to defend your position with examples.

  4. Thursday Feb 23rd 2012 Lena Horne is a famous singer and entertainer who experienced great adversity during her early career. As an African American, she found that she was not welcome in the hotels where she was singing. She was denied movie roles as well. Horne persevered and had a stellar and well-respected career. Write a paragraph about a challenge or a series of challenges you or someone you know has had and explain how you or the other person overcame them.

  5. Friday Feb 24th 2012 Speaking at the International Congress of Women in Berlin in 1904, Mary Church Terrell was the only person to give a speech in English, German, and French. Her thesis focused on equal rights for all women and Negroes wherever they may be found.” Write a persuasive paragraph, expanding Terrell’s thesis to include other people for whose equality you would fight.
