Additional Caveat • The following four slides contain representative comments from the survey’s open-ended questions. • These slides are not intended to convey the viewpoints of SURA or of the SERON (Southeast Regional Optical Networking) Planning Cmte Day-1 Survey
The Quilt: Attendee Comments • Largely successful in its role as GigaPOP & RON pricing consortium + advocate • Membership growing • Increasing diversity a challenge • Some perceive tension w home base @Internet2 Day-1 Survey
Internet2: Attendee Comments • New governance model more open to CIOs, RONs, researchers; complex; in transition now • New network advanced, costly • Revenue targets unrealistic? • Open to re-engagement w NLR, but has the window of oppty passed? Day-1 Survey
NLR: Attendee Comments • Delivering services at layers 3, 2, 1 • 14 investor-members are RONs or universities representing RONs, who contributed $5M over 5 years • Cisco has played a key role • Smaller, lower overhead org • More focused on RONs & researchers • Dubious about merger, per se Day-1 Survey
PNWGP: Attendee Comments • Long-term strategy, Seattle-centric, with metro, state, multi-state regional, national, & international dimensions • Multi-state med ctr service area key • Big Science to K12 in the vision • Owned infrastructure a high priority • Model for SURA region(s)? Day-1 Survey
Key Concerns • Duplicative national infrastructures • High fixed costs, so unclear that “competition” is beneficial • How to resolve the impasse at the national level? • Tradeoff between national & regional investments Day-1 Survey
Key Opportunities • Take leadership role in resolving NLR-Internet2 “train wreck” • Leverage NLR backbone in SE: DC, Raleigh, Atlanta, Jax, Baton Rouge, Houston, Tulsa • Learn from PNWGP: Long-term vision, creative & opportunistic partnering • Fill in the missing areas Day-1 Survey
Most Important Topic Today? • Organize feedback to Internet2 • Strategize on I2-NLR resolution • Organize to be a force on regional & state networking challenges, today and in to the future Day-1 Survey
