At our next meeting: Michael will discuss what drives him to be a (Liberal) politician and what he hopes to achieve both personally and for the people of Waverley. He will also touch briefly on his professional life before Parliament and some family background.

Reports from our last meeting Report from the President President Al was also the Chairperson for the evening. He mentioned that the "Show your Tune for Charity" Bestchance Charity Ball is to be held at the Golden Sands, 399 Blackburn Road, East Burwood on 30th Saturday 7pm - Midnight  Tickets $85 each or $850 for a table of 10. The MC for the evening is Des Dowling a comedian  / TV personality.  A silent auction will also be part of the everning.  Contact detail is Tracy Purcell on 8562 5100. He also reminded members that next week there is no meeting due to Anzac Day and the following meeting on Monday 2nd May is a Partners Night. The speaker will be local MP, Michael Gidley. Brian Norton reminded everyone to purchase their entertainment books $65 from him. Promote them to your friends also. He also mentioned a Fellowship Dinner to be held on Saturday May 21 at the East Empress, Glen Waverley. Further details to come. Noel Taylor has tickets for sale for the Champagne Supper at the Quilt Show from 7.30pm on Friday 27th May, The cost is $20. Please return Quilt Show raffle tickets and money to Noel Taylor as soon as possible. Peter Dalwood is also trying to finalise the money he raised from riding to Adelaide. If you sponsored Peter please organise payment.

  3. Conference report • The Rotary District 9810 Conference was held in Adelaide at the start of April. President-elect Don Kerley provided the club with a comprehensive report. He said the conference was very good with great fellowship. 29 members from the club attended. The MC, Ian Cover was excellent. Highlights were • Grace Bawden, a delightful opera singer • Valerie Browning, a nurse in Sudan • Mike Quarmby spoke about sustainable indigenous communites and the creation of Outback Pride where bush food is now prepared for sale in the wider community. Tara Winker, a 24 year old who has set up an orphanage in Cambodia. • Youth activities such as youth exchange, Interact and the 4 way test public speaking competition • Cooking demonstration with Simon Bryant • John Blount – strategic approach to growing membership • Connecting with the community social media • Normie Rowe and Bev Harrell entertained on the Saturday night and the club won the ‘To the Manor Born’ award. Fellowship Opportunity Location : Waverley Pitch & Putt Golf Course, Wellington Rd.   4. CLUB ASSEMBLY • Reports on the 2010/11 Rotary year • Club Service – Don Kerley • More than half our members are involved in club service roles. Special mention needs to be made of: • Peter Dalwood who has done a great job with the website. It is very extensive. You are encouraged to use it. • Current sponsors are Lane Toyota, Sacred Source and Jet Set – let Don Kerley know if you wish to advertise your business. • Planned fellowhip event at Pitch and Putt golf course on Sat 30th April – details in bulletin • Strategic plan visioning workshop was held on 4th April. Over half of the members attended • Vocational and Young Generations – Brian Norton • This Rotary year students have been involved with NYSF, RYLA, Camp Awakenings, MUNA, RYPEN, The Science Experience and Schools Essay Competition plus a vocational visit to Kenworth Trucks and Rural Support with Community Service. • Sue Mills – International Committee • Major projects have been: • Milking cow project – a cow called Glenda has been purchased in Kenya. It has already had a baby, a female. The milk from the cow is used to feed orphans. • Radio free Somalia – equipment purchased and ready to ship to Somalia • Cham Resh – King Gan – farming education microcredit project – 25 families – will help the village considerably and will be able to phase out assistance within 3 years. • Vanessa Grant School visit to Kenya – 7 fulltime teachers and 110 girls • Donated money to a few other international projects such as Aqua box and Project Cleft • Money given to assist with the construction of toilets and education about how to use the toilets in the village of Cham Resh. • Margaret Riseborough spoke on behalf of Graham Felstead and the Community Committee • The focus has been on community health, safety and environment programmes – • Tandarra Place – bought whiteboard and dishwasher • Best Chance – proceeds from our quilt show and the funds will go towards a bicycle track at the school • Organ donation – successful promotion at The Glen • Bowel scan – Di Alper • Men’s Shed – over 50 members already • Rural support – 4 televisions for a hostel in Alexandra • Money given to flood relief and Seeding Victoria • Finances – Bernie Edwards • Bernie said that the club is travelling well financially and are in fact a bit ahead of the plan $15000 available for the incoming committee for 2010/2011 year and perhaps have some money ie. $4000 left to spend NOW. We should end the year on a satisfactory and healthy note. • Members wishing to read the financial report prepared by treasurer Bernie will find it in the members only section of the website. After logging on, click on 'View Club Documents' in the My ClubRunner section, and then select 'Income and Expenditure - April 2011'. • Louis asked if the podium could be changed to either the left or right so that it is under the lights so that we can see the speakers faces well and they can read their notes easily. • Tony Hough asked Don Kerley what the timetable for the strategic plan development is. Don mentioned that there is no timetable, but hopes to have a plan together within 3 – 6 months. Peter Dalwood is actually the Chair of a sub-committee looking at this development and said that on an International level we have until 2014 for this to happen.

  5. HEALTHY COMMUNITIES EDUCATED COMMUNITIES Malaria Awareness Day—30 April 2011—Dinner & Fundraiser Microscopy for Malaria—Timor-Leste Malaria is the world’s most preventable infectious disease. Every year, 3 million people become ill with Malaria and 1 million people die. Malaria affects women and children under 5 in many of the countries close to Australia, such as Timor-Leste (East Timor), Papua New Guinea and many areas in Asia. Rotarians Against Malaria is a group working to eradicate Malaria in our near neighbours. The team has developed a project to provide microscopes and training needed for the people of Timor-Leste. Microscopes will enable rapid diagnosis and treatment of Malaria and potentially save many thousands of lives every year. You can help this vital project! Come to the MAD dinner 2011! For the diary: FELLOWSHIP DINNER Saturday 21st May, 2011 East Empress Chinese Restaurant 263A Springvale RoadGlen Waverley Further details to follow soon Rotary Bushfire Recovery Project The RC of Brownhill Creek is managing a Bushfire recovery project in the fire regions of Victoria, and appeals for volunteers from Rotary Clubs and other Community groups to become involved. Although over two years have passed since Black Saturday, there is still much work to be done, with homes to be rebuilt, and thousands of kilometres of fencing to be replaced. Kevin Roberts is eager to staff the June Roster with Victorian Volunteers. Volunteer teams will be formed to work on fences, or minor building construction projects, clean up fire areas, wood splitting, tree or vegetation replacement, or any other work that may help communities and fire survivors to move on with their lives. The work is in Yea, Flowerdale and Kinglake areas. Accommodation and meals will be provided to any volunteer, as well as assistance given to offset fuel costs for travelling to fire regions for volunteers who work for a week or more. In 2009, clubs in Kenya and the Netherlands received Foundation funding to upgrade dairy farms and provide vocational training for the Oikocredit-supported milk cooperative near Nairobi. Photo courtesy Oikocredit International The Rotary Foundation Trustees have reached an agreement with Oikocredit International, a Netherlands-based cooperative financial institution that promotes socially responsible investing, to form the first strategic partnership under the Foundation’s Future Vision Plan. Through the partnership, the Foundation will offer packaged grants for Rotary clubs and districts to work with microfinance institutions within the Oikocredit network. Together, these institutions and Rotarians will identify local needs, develop effective approaches, and structure training programs to improve entrepreneurs’ business skills. “This strategic partnership with Oikocredit enables Rotary to work with a globally recognized leader in the field of microfinance in order to make a meaningful contribution to poverty reduction,” said Foundation Trustee Chair Carl-Wilhelm Stenhammar. “It allows Rotary club members to directly contribute their valuable expertise and skills without administering the loans directly.” Individual Rotary clubs have worked successfully with Oikocredit partners in the past. In 2009, clubs in Kenya and the Netherlands received Foundation funding to upgrade dairy farms and establish training farms belonging to an Oikocredit-supported milk cooperative near Nairobi. The result was an increase in the quality and quantity of milk production. What does Oikocredit offer Rotary? Oikocredit is a cooperative financial institution that offers loans or investment capital to microfinance institutions, cooperatives, fair trade organizations, and small- to medium-size enterprises in the developing world. Investors earn modest financial returns and the knowledge that their money is being used to fight poverty and promote fair trade in an environmentally responsible manner. Founded in 1975, Oikocredit has US$684 million (€480 million) invested in over 800 organizations in more than 70 countries, benefiting more than 20 million people through its microfinance partners. “Knowledge and training are as important as financing,” explained Tor G. Gull, Oikocredit’s managing director. “Oikocredit’s financing relationship with local entrepreneurs and microfinance organizations means we also see the need to help them strengthen their capacity to develop further, both economically and socially. Rotary funding and expertise from volunteers will greatly facilitate this effort.” Rotary Foundation Global Grants support large, international projects with sustainable, high-impact outcomes in Rotary’s areas of focus. Packaged global grants developed by the Foundation and Oikocredit align with the area of economic and community development. Because the administrative work of designing the project and finding a cooperating organization has already been done, Rotary clubs and districts can focus on identifying beneficiaries, providing technical expertise or direct service, and publicizing the project. One hundred districts are participating in the Future Vision pilot, a three-year test of the Foundation's streamlined grant structure, which began 1 July. All districts will begin using the model on 1 July 2013. Information on how pilot clubs and districts can apply for packaged global grants to work with microfinance institutions within the Oikocredit network will be available soon at www.rotary.org

Celebration of 90 years of Rotary in Australia 2011 marks the 90th year anniversary of Rotary in Australia and the Rotary Club of Melbourne, Australia’s first Rotary Club invites Rotarians to a Gala Dinner to celebrate this occasion in the presence of Her Excellency, Ms. Quentin Bryce AC, Governor-General of the Commonwealth of Australia. This is an opportunity to acknowledge in a formal way the work of the current 37,000 Australian Rotary volunteers both male and female, from the 1202 Clubs in Australia to mark their 90 years of service.” The 90th Anniversary Dinner will be held on Monday 23rd May 2011 at 6.30pm in the Members Dining Room of the Melbourne Cricket Club, Brunton Avenue, Jolimont, dress Black Tie and cost $155.00 per person.   10. VICTORIAN FLOODS • The Board has previously announced that the Club would donate $10000 towards the Victorian flood recovery. Rotaryannes has donated a further $500 and some members a further $1000, giving $11500 in total. • Earlier, President Al had indicated that the Club’s intention was to support small communities impacted by the floods in their infrastructure that would not be easily recovered from larger programmes of government or councils. It was also indicated that the Victorian flood predicament was not going to clear quickly and it would be some time before the nature and extent of the need would be able to be established. • In some parts of the state flood waters are only now starting to recede while commentary is that other parts will see flood waters for some time further. The impact of the flooding is now starting to evidence itself in community facilities that will not be able to be reinhabited at all or only after considerable demolition and rebuilding while farming properties will suffer in the short term from crop losses and for several years from soil degradation. • Several small communities within northern Victorian shires have been identified by the Community Committee as having need for support to re-establish infrastructure such as the community hall which, in country areas, is a real focal point of community life. It will still take time before the needs of those communities can be fully identified and scoped - it could take several more months for waters to recede and drying-out to reach a point where this is practical. • In between time, the Board has become aware of a predicament worthy of support in Creswick. Creswick has been subject to inundation on three occasions since September last year. A facility operated by Seeding Victoria has been impacted on each of those occasions. • Seeding Victoria is an incorporated not-for-profit association which assists in production of seed, supply of seed for revegetation projects and development of training programs in community awareness of the role of seed development and supply. It receives no government funding and relies on seed sales for revenue. In the February inundation, water entered the seed bank for the second time, shifting the seedbank and the seed cleaning room on their foundations. Relocation is the only option for long term viability but Seeding Victoria is not within the designated area for Rural Finance Assistance and is ineligible for insurance to assist in relocation. • Particular items required as part of relocation are: • refrigeration equipment used to maintain temperature constancy of the seedbank • New laboratory and bench fitout • Seed storage shelving • Microscopic camera for seed cataloguing • These are estimated at around $10500. The Board has indicated to Seeding Victoria the Club’s willingness to contribute $5000 towards these elements of the relocation. Seeding Victoria is considering its relocation options in more detail. • Although the $6500 of funds remaining is not yet specifically tagged, the Board is very confident that real needs will crystalise reasonably soon that will make our contribution meaningful and significant to the recipient community.Recent months have seen a number of unfortunate and catastrophic events in our neighbours . A real need for support exists in the redevelopment of Christchurch – the nature and extent will only unfold with time. The Board is alert to that potential need too and is seeking advice on the most appropriate means of channelling possible assistance.
