Physical Journeys and Inner Journeys What are they? • When we go on a Physical journey we meet new people, we see new places and we experience new and amazing situations and events • Our Inner spirit or soul is challenged and enriched by these experiences, people and places • Write a one page first person narrative about how you have been enriched spiritually by a physical journey

Inner journeys • In our study of the Inner journeys we will read and explore the ways in which texts depict journeys of the mind and spirit. • We will examine the underlying ideas about inner journeys and consider how the power of the inner journey challenges our thinking and how we have gained a greater understanding of ourselves and the world around us • We will explore how composers represent their ideas on journeys of the spirit and mind in their texts

  24. Journey of Michael Oher • The Blind Side is a true story about Michael Oher – a famous football player in the USA • It is a film based on the non-fiction book ‘Blind Side’ by Michael Lewis • It is a Physical journey? • It is an Inner journey ?

Blind Side • This is a film text about the life and career of Michael Oher • Emotive dialogue gives emphasis to the central themes of love , hope, redemption, courage and trust • Characterization gives emphasis to the inner journeys of Michael Oher and the Tuohy family • The performance of each of the characters in the movie exemplifies these characters

  26. Journeys involve obstacles • Film techniques such as flash backs show the inner journey of Michael Oher as he reflects on his turbulent past. His horrific childhood, where he would close his eyes to ignore the ugly events surrounding his drug addicted mother • The inner journey is evident through the body language and facial expressions • Eyes down showing low self esteem, • Setting –stadium where Oher is collecting food and them • Imaginative • Question: What journey is evident in the Blind Side by Michael Lewis?

Journeys allow people to gain new insights about themselves • The sound track is so relevant to the journey of Michael as he returns home with Leanne to find his clothes • The use of colour – black and white through the flashback as we move into the photographic past • ‘ Do you have somewhere to sleep Michael… don’t lie to me boy…. “ Michael learns kindness from Leanne Tuohy in this opening scent. • Low angle shots give emphasis to Michael’s size and yet due to his background, HIS WORLD, he has such a low self worth • Michael has his world- the Thouys have their world

  28. Journey’s challenge the power of our thinking In 12 months Michael Oher changed from a homeless young man to a young man with confidence . He went to church and improved his grades. He dressed beautifully and was the most sort after football player in Memphis. In the scene where he returns home to collect his clothing we have slow motion, low angle shots with eyes down and sad facial expression Leanne changes this body language. She develops self esteem in Michael.

Josie’s Journey Role of family • Josie’s father Michael Andretti ( Chapter 6), He wants to adopt her ( chapter 8) and he wants her to live with him in Balmain, Sydney- she finally finds acceptance • Josie’s mother Christina has had difficulties raising a child on her own- Josie does not accept her male friend- she grows to understand her mother’s difficulties • Failed relationship of her Nonna and Francesco and the difficulties that Nonna had as a new immigrant in Australia • Strained relationship between Christina and her father

Josie’s Journey Cultural issues • Josie’s family is part of the Italian community • Grandmother with arranged marriage, Francesco – way of life in Australia very different to Italy • Journey learns that she need not be ashamed of who she is and to cherish the old ways and her family • “ Culture is nailed into you so deep you can’t escape it” • Girls at school come from racist backgrounds – they call her a “wog’

Josie’s Journey Relationships • Relationship with Jacob Coote – local boy – lives in Redfern and goes to a government school • She learns that despite his social status – he is tough but sensitive and he loves his family • John Barton is her ‘idol’ – she would like to change her status with him • John , however, has no ‘say’ in his life- it is planned for him by his father, a politician • The only way out is to ‘Suicide’ • Josie comes to see the differences and the similarities between her life and that of the two boys • She accepts ‘who she is’

It is the year her father comes back into her life, the year she falls in love, the year she discovers the secrets of her family’s past and the year she sets herself free, “I’ll run one day- run to be free and think for myself not as an Australian and not as an Italian

The Structure of the Journey Narrative All journey narratives share a basic structure: • Orientation The responder is introduced to the character/persona and becomes aware of who they are before they embark on their journey. • Complication Events and/or circumstances lead the character/persona to embark on their journey. • Climax The character/persona of the text encounters obstacles or discovers something new about their journey. This is usually about 2/3 through the text and is the turning point in their journey • Resolution The responder can see that the character/persona has clearly been changed by their journey. This new person can clearly be contrasted with the persona/character that the responder was introduced to in the orientation.
