Academic and Professional Societies for History Majors • A History major creates opportunities for assisting with Business, Religious studies, and study of languages and English. • A History major’s jobs include historians, professors, and museum employees • As well as the jobs mentioned above there are numerous organizations that specialize in the studying of specific times in history • Such as the Organization Of American Historians (OAH) which specializes in the studying of American History. • The OAH’s main purpose is to promote new ways to study American history and raise awareness of past events. • The Association for the study of African American Life and History’s main mission is to “promote, research, preserve, interpret and disseminate information about black life, history and culture.

Conventions and Expectations of writing History • Writing’s role in history is important in the way it connects and helps people view and interpret the past. • Writing in history differs from most other subjects in the way that it renovates facts into evidence, and evidence into disagreement. • There are two main types of writing in history and they are writing with the use of primary sources and the use of secondary sources. • Primary sources are sources that come from the time period being studied and the writing consists of facts and opinionative interpretations of historical events • Secondary Sources are sources that are written after the era being studied and are written in hopes of either supporting or arguing against former interpretation of the events

The Role of Language in History • Language itself is History and is a main part of what we study today, it is used when writing, speaking and interpreting History • There forth without language there would be no History, because there would be no explanation of the events that occurred in the past • Language is different in many cultures, and it is important to understand the different meanings of numerous languages to comprehend the significances of history. • With the use of language through writing and speaking our idea’s and viewpoints are expressed on specific topics.
