Acrostic Poetry • word/topic is written vertically • the first letter of the first word is used to begin each line • words or phrases relate to the topic word
Prewriting an Acrostic • write topic word(s) vertically in the boxes on the left side of the paper • lines start with a letter of the topic word • each line is a phrase or sentence
Prewriting an Acrostic • each line relates to the topic • capitalize topic word letters • does not have to rhyme • two phrases per letter

Practice Activity • create a class acrostic by using shared pen • use the teacher’s name as a topic • list two phrases per letter to describe the teacher
Assessment • Write an acrostic poem where the topic word is a close or best friend’s first name. • Remember to list TWO phrases for each letter.

Drafting an Acrostic • where we begin to gather and script complete thoughts • a first or preliminary form of writing • like having rehearsal before a performance
Drafting an Acrostic • Do not worry about… • correct spelling • punctuation • The main purpose of a rough draft is simply to get our ideas down on paper.
Practice Activity • model the drafting of an acrostic by using the graphic organizer • take suggestions from the students as to how the draft will be completed
Assessment • Students will complete a draft of an acrostic poem, using a checklist, based on their previously created graphic organizer from the prewriting stage.
