Muscle, joint, and bone injuries • Strain = a tear in the muscle. • Sprain = an injury to ligaments around a joint • Call 911 if : • The pain is severe. • The joint appears deformed.
Treating minor strains and sprains • Protect = bandage or splint. • Rest = Limit use of injured body part. • Ice = Ice the injured body part. • Compress = Wrap firmly with a bandage. • Elevate = Raise injured body part above the level of the heart if possible.
Fracture (vocab) • A break in the bone.
Dislocation (vocab) • A separation of a bone from its normal position in a joint.
Unconsciousness (vocab) • The condition of not being alert or aware of your surroundings. • Recovery Position
Concussion (Vocab) • A jarring injury to the brain that can cause unconsciousness.
Nosebleeds • Two main causes = Allergies/Dry Air and injury to the nose. • Squeeze nostrils together and lean forward. • If bleeding persists after 20 minutes seek emergency help.
