  3. Positive Incentives • Students will receive incentives for positive behavior and work habits. • These include, but are not limited to: • Dojo points (Individual reward) • Table points (Group reward) • Popcorn scoops (Class reward)

  4. Discipline • Students will be accountable for their behavior during school. • Clipboard for in class disruptions • Loss of recess • Behavior Journal • Contact home • Meet with the principal

  5. Daily Schedule

  6. Accelerated Reader • Students must read chapter books in their reading level. • Students need to read a book from start to finish, then take a quiz on it. • Students are required to earn 5 points/month. • Students who are reading 20 minutes 5 nights per week, as required by the Weekly Reading Log, will have no problem reaching these goals.

  7. Weekly Homework Schedule

  8. Homework • Homework is given daily. • Language arts assignments are given on a weekly basis. • Math homework is given daily, including Friday. • Students are given an explanation of all homework pages when they are assigned. • Reading Log: 20 minutes, 5 nights/wk

  9. Math Homework • To prepare students for middle and high school, they must show all workon math assignments. • A student who does not show work or does not follow directions will be given an “incomplete.” When it is turned in correctly, it will be marked as “late.”

  10. Reading Comprehension • Given on Tuesday, due following Tuesday • Students must underline and number the part of the text where they found each and every answer. • Answers must be written in complete sentences. • Students must include the question in the answer. • No pronouns at the beginning of an answer (ex: he, she, they) • Be specific!

  11. Grammar • Given on Wednesday, due the following Wednesday • One focus for each week • Introduced and discussed in class before homework is assigned • Grammar quizzes are given each week.

  12. Spelling • Given on Thursday, due the following Thursday • Packet introduces the words for the following week. • Test on Thursday or Friday

Reading Log • All fourth grade students are required to read CHAPTER BOOKS for 20 minutes, 5 nights/week • Must include pages read, minutes read, and parent signature for each night • Students need to read an appropriate number of pages each night. • Different summaries must be provided each night • Must include a minimum of 4 complete sentences • Sentences must be 7 or more words.

Study Guides • Will receive in math, social studies, & science • Students must study for 30 minutes before asking a parent to sign. • Students will often be given extra credit for showing how they studied, such as attaching flashcards or a practice test to their study guide. • Study guides will be inputted as a homework assignment. • Missing/Late/Incomplete study guides will count toward Wednesday detentions.

  15. Classwork • All students are given sufficient time to complete classwork assignments. • Incomplete assignments will be completed at recess. • Incomplete assignments may be sent home for completion in addition to homework.

Incomplete Assignments • Assignments will be marked “incomplete” for any of the following reasons: • Not showing work • Not following written or oral directions • Skipping or missing a portion of the assignment • Incorrectly completed assignments lacking effort • Language arts work completed in print • When incomplete assignments are completed, returned, and accepted as complete, they will be marked “late.”

  18. Tips for Helping Your Child at Home

Upper Grade Policies • Wednesday After School Detention • 3 times on recess clipboard in one week • 5 missing/incomplete/late homework assignments** • 10 missing/incomplete/late classwork assignments • In-class disruptions at teacher’s discretion • Discipline Code **Missing/Late/Incomplete assignments carry over for the entire trimester.

  20. Student Agendas • Students are required to record all homework assignments and tests in their agendas. • Please sign your child’s agenda at least once a week (daily is recommended).

  21. Friday Folder • Please review & remove completed assignments. • These will be on the right side. • Check for scores, comments, and notes and review these with your child. • Many tests will require a parent signature. • These will be on the left side. • Please sign and return the folder, green slip, and any other signed items every Monday.

  23. Test Corrections • Students will be required to correct and return math tests. • Students will do all corrections on a separate sheet of paper, not erasing anything on the actual test. • Parent signatures will be required. • Corrected and signed tests are due on Mondays.

  24. Absences • Please notify me in advance if you know your child will be missing school or leaving early. • Work can be picked up from the front office or sent home with a sibling/neighbor. • Please send your child back with a note excusing their absence.

  25. Important Websites • Websites can be accessed from any computer, tablet, or iPad with an internet connection. • Links will also be available on the class website. • User names and passwords will be given as soon as available.

  26. Items Used in 4thGrade

  27. Room Parent • This year, Merced is looking for room parents to assist in each classroom. • Some responsibilities of a room parent are to: • Coordinate school activities/events • Communicate among classroom parents and other room parents • Communicate between the teacher and parents • Assist in the classroom • If you are interested and able to dedicate some time to the class/school, grab an orange flier from the back. • Of course, if you are unable to commit to being a room parent, you can still volunteer in the classroom or from home….Just let me know!

  28. Common Core • Emphasis on writing, critical thinking, problem solving, and higher level thinking • Students must be able to explain/justify their answers and thought process both orally and in writing. • Assessments and state testing are adapting to these new standards.
