With Al-Husain • 72 persons were at Husain’s camp • All knew they were facing imminent death • They faced an enemy of 5,000: one against 70 • Some say they faced 30,000: one against 422 • 8 were Sahaaba (one was older than 90) • 20 were Companions of Ali • Al-Husain’s family (total of 44)
Ashuraa • Ashuraa was the culmination of the confrontation • Not fazed by the overwhelming number of the enemy, Al-Husain’s camp was: • Men of valor • Fought to defend the Islamic Principles • At the expense of their lives • To please the Al-Mighty • They all fought to the death, be they: • Very old (one of them more than 90 yrs old) • Mature adults • Youthful • Or even teenagers
Facing each other on the 10th • 72 of Al-Husain’s facing thousands of the enemy • Many of the enemy were those who previously urged Al-Husain to join them against Yazid, but now they are in flagrant betrayal • They were • Arabs, • Muslims, • Iraqi • All bound and determined to kill rather than support • Their intention was to kill the very family of the Prophet and desecrate it

The Fighting in the Morning • At first, Al-Husain’s fighters were on the offensive • Enemy had to ask for reinforcement • The enemy burned the tents in the back, then the fighting became more ferocoius • The companions of Husain started to fall one after the other • By noon they stopped for Dhuhr Prayer • One Companion protected Al-Husain with his own body, and fell dead of his arrow wounds as the Prayer was finished

The Fighting in the Afternoon • Al-Abbas, preceded by his 4 brothers, fight to the death • Ali ibn Al-Husain fights bravely and ferociously, but is eventually overwhelmed by the enemy • Women and children watch in horror and much anxiety, and its devastating feeling • Even Preteen and Teenagers go out for the fight, get killed one after the other • A crying baby a few months old is hit with an arrow as Al-Husain was pleading for a drink of water for him

Finally: Al-Husain • Cut in many places and severely bleeding • Al-Husain becomes weak and falls from his horse • No one dared to finish him off • Shimr screamed at his fighters, but they refused • Then Shimr himself finished him off • Shimr’s mother was a disbeliever (Majoosi)
