  1. Wednesday, 09 November 2011 How did Hitler become Chancellor of Germany in 1933? L.O. To know the importance of the Wall Street Crash in helping Hitler become Chancellor in 1933.

  2. How did Hitler become Chancellor in 1933? In 1928 few Germans would have predicted that Hitler would become leader of Germany. With less than 3% of Germans voting for them in 1928, the Nazis seemed to be going nowhere. Yet by July 1932 the Nazis were the most popular party, and in January 1933 Hitler became Chancellor. So why the sudden change in fortunes? Some of the reasons for this were down to Hitler and the Nazis themselves, but other reasons were outside their control.

  3. We believe that the Nazi’s got into power because of their own actions. Effective leadership Clever promises Good Organisation Brilliant Propaganda We believe that the Nazi’s were helped by events they had no control over. Wall Street Crash Fear of Communism Weak Opponents Political Deal Which team of historians are you going to support in the tug-of-war?

  4. The Wall Street Crash 1929

  5. Tasks: • Copy the WSC diagram on pg38. • What were the consequences of the Great Depression? • How did the Great Depression affect the support for extreme parties?

  6. Extension Task: Make up a conversation between two men in Germany during the Great Depression. You should discuss: • How they lost their jobs • What life was like for them during the Depression • What they think about Hitler. Don’t be afraid to use your imagination. You might have to make up a few of the details but if you are sensible about this you can have a good giggle when acting them out.
