  1. SECOND-GENERATION PROBLEM The introduction of Nile perch has greatly contributed to the destabilization of Lake Victoria’s ecosystem . In turn, the human condition in the region has deteriorated.

  2. The Nile perch is responsible through predation and competition for food for the decimation and possible disappearance of two hundred or more species of Haplochromine Cichlids in Lake Victoria.

  3. The explosion of the Nile perch population is one of the reasons for the change of Lake Victoria from a highly complex ecosystem into a stressed ecosystem with a simplified foodweb.

  4. The surge in the fishing industry that accompanied the Nile perch population explosion completely changed the socio-economics of the existing fisheries and the way in which local people earned a living.

  5. Shanty towns have appeared all over the Lake Victoria region. This has led to the spread of HIV/AIDS and malaria in the region as well as serious pollution of the lake due to the dumping of raw sewage.
