Objectives of a cluster • Identify the assets of the BioRegion and construction of a common vision: building a sense of community • Catalyze the development of the cluster through the support of public-private agents and the synergies among them • Improve the access to critical resources : talent, funding, knowledge,… • Foster the innovation as engine for growing, mostly in traditional sectors • Foster international partnerships
Why biotechnology needs a cluster organization Biotechnology is a complex ecosystem The value chain is long and a wide variety of actors and factors are involved. This means that: • Governance systems requires the involvement of many actors • The complexity requires that the whole ecosystem has to be taken into account • Each cluster develops a different governance model

Biocat Biocat is a private non profit foundation, founded in 2006. Its creation was fostered by both the Government of Catalonia and the Barcelona Local Council. The objective of Biocat when it was created was to enable the interactions between the public and private sectors, as well as offer the possibility of gain access to other funding programs apart from those of the Catalan Government Biocat is a small size organization that nowadays employs 19 people, whose budget is around 3 million Euros per year (1,1 of which came from regional Government) Biocat is the Catalan organization that coordinates and promotes biotechnology, biomedicine and medical technologies in Catalonia. Its mission is to boost all the agents of this environment and their initiatives, so that we have an ecosystem with strong innovation systems, active technology and knowledge transfers and an entrepreneurial business fabric that acts as economic driver of the country and contributes to society welfare. .
