We are now using Floppy’s Phonics scheme to teach phonics in Foundation Stage and Year 1. • It is a highly interactive scheme that engages all children in their learning • The Daily Phonics sessions follow the same pattern each day and are divided into discreet sections.

Teach - new phoneme ( using The I.W.B. screen. - cvc spellings - correct letter formation - HF words(including tricky words)
Practise • - reading words using taught phonemes in isolation OR • - writing words using taught phonemes • - phoneme/grapheme correspondences
Apply -reading captions and sentences using taught phonemes OR - writing captions and sentences using taught phonemes
Helping your child to read • Listening to taped stories • Reading to your child – model pointing to words as you read • Share the reading with your child -you read a page, your child reads a page • Reading different types of books – both fiction and non-fiction • Reading signs and labels ie the supermarket is the perfect place to do this in a fun way!
Helping your child to write • Give them opportunities to write at home ie. shopping lists, messages, own stories, labels etc. • Write shopping lists with your child – let them see you writing • Ask your child to read back what they have written • Encourage them to use appropriate case and use letter names and sounds
Year 1 Phonics (Stage 4 and 5 -see handout) • Term 1 - Floppy's Phonics • Term 2 - mixture of Floppy's Phonics and Phonics International • Term 3 - Phonics International • 25 minute daily sessions • 5 minutes recapping, revising (flashcards, previous pages on Floppy Phonics) • 10 minutes teaching of new sound (reading/sounding out of words using segmenting fingers then blending sounds together) • 10 minutes applying what learnt (children choose a spelling of the same sound to complete a word and write down on white boards)
