  1. Middle Colonies Led by the colonies of New York and Pennsylvania

  2. New York • Was originally settled by the Dutch and called New Netherland • Peter Stuyvesant (the governor of the colony) lost the colony to the English in 1664 because he did not have the support of the settlers; he was very cruel to them • The colony was given as a gift to the Duke of York and renamed New York

  3. Trade Center New York’s location, religious toleration, and diverse population (because the Dutch were allowed to stay) helped to transform the colony into a profitable center of trade and finance. New York City became the trade capital of the colonies and still holds that position today for the United States.

  4. Pennsylvania • Established by William Penn as a refuge for the Quakers (another Protestant group not welcome in England) • Quakers believed that ministers were not necessary and in the total equality of all people. • Pennsylvania was known for religious toleration, better treatment for Native Americans, and its stand against slavery.

  5. Quebec • The first permanent French colony in the New World located along the St. Lawrence River • Established by the French explorer Samuel de Champlain (a fur trader) • Reasons for the settlement of Quebec included the quest for the Northwest Passage, desire for more small game (beaver) and other natural resources, desire to spread Catholicism, and the country’s rivalry with England and Spain.
