POST TRAUMATIC STRESS DISORDER • Symptoms: • Recurring nightmares • reexperiencing the event • hypervigilance • Anxiety • sleeplessness • numbness • dissociation
TWO TYPES • Acute Stress Disorder: Same symptoms but only last 1 month • Delayed: when situation not dealt with, person uses defenses to cope so symptoms subside until something triggers an acute reaction
Precipitating Events • Serving in Combat or Living in a War Zone • Suffering Personal or Family Victimization • Living Through a Natural Disaster • Surviving a Manmade Disaster`
Phases of community disaster • Heroic phase • Honeymoon phase • Disillusionment phase • Reconstruction phase
Interventions • Allow denial in the beginning • Eventually help clients channel floods of feelings into productive avenues for growth • Critical Incident and Debriefing: educate about PTSD and help normalize the many symptoms they will experience • Empathy is essential • EMDR:eye movement desensitization and reprocessing
