  1. Viruses Biological particle composed of genetic material and protein. DNA or RNA Protein coat

  2. Comparing viruses and cells • Structural parts • Nucleic acid • Reproduction • Cellular respiration

  3. Structure • Typically polyhedrons, look like crys • Helical- Like the double helix, long and narrow

  4. Viruses are classified based on their contents • DNA • RNA • Retro viruses • Reverse transcriptase

  5. Other rouge Nucleic acids and proteins • Viroids • RNA stands which can get into cells and cause damage • Prions • Proteins which disrupt the shape of every protein they touch • Mad cows disease • Creutzfeld-jacob disease

  6. http://science.howstuffworks.com/mad-cow-disease2.htm

  7. Reproduction • Lytic cycle • Absorption, receptor sites • Enzyme dissolves into the cell • Replication, • Virus capsule dissolves and takes control of the cell • Assembly • new virus molecules are put together in the cell • Release • newly constructed virus molecules burst out of the cell.

  8. The lysogenic cycle • Attachment • Virus attaches to the outside of the cell (host) • Injection • Puts DNA or RNA into the cell • Integration • The DNA from the virus insert into the DNA of the host • Cell multiplication • Host cells divide, like normal.. Creating multiple copies of the Virus DNA

  9. HIV virus (which causes AIDS) Virus invades cell It’s RNA is released in the cell Reverse transcriptase is released into the cell Reverse transcriptase reads the RNA and converts it into DNA The new strand of DNA (viral) is inserted into the hosts DNA Provirus sits in wait until some time later when it begins making more HIV
