Military Factors • In 1462 Ivan III came to power. He began to conquer Mongol lands around Moscow and build up his strength • By 1480, he had destroyed the majority of Mongol control • He continued his conquest for 2 decades, tripling the size of Moscow’s territory
Military Factors Continued • Starting in 1533, Ivan IV conquered more Mongol lands to the south and east, adding them to Russia • Peter I conquered part of Sweden, creating Russia’s “Window into the West”
Cultural Factors • Majority of Russia was Orthodox Christian • Many different cultures incorporated • Russia modernized itself by opening up to the West
Political Factors • Czar- Russian Emperor • Ivan IV gained throne as a child and ruled for 50 years He took three steps to improve government • Conquest 2. Institution reforms uniform code of laws 3. Fought feudalism- curb the power of boyars (Russian landowning nobilities)
Economic Factors • Peter I- Built a modern new capital named St. Petersburg. Built factories, roads, a professional army ,and civil services. • Catherine the Great- founded schools and supported arts and science. She promoted Enlightenment, principles of justice, and good government.
Social Factors • Nearly half of peasants were poor(20 million) • Social system was outdated • Uprising from the Serfs was common • Social system was feudalistic
Reasons for Decline • Outdated social system led to a serf uprising • Population grew about half were serfs (about 20 million) • Brought the empire crumbling down • Too concentrated on science and technological developments and ignored socio-political developments
