  3. How common is depression? • 5% population is affected each year • 1 in 4 women & 1 in 10 men will have symptoms severe enough to require treatment at some point in their life.

  4. Some myths about depression • Depression is not a weakness. • Nothing bad has happened, how can I be depressed? • Telling someone to “snap out of it” or “pull their socks up” is not helpful. • One of the most common conditions GPs see – come and discuss it with us if you are concerned.

  5. Treatment of Depression • Watchful waiting & self care • Guided self-help - cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT) • Relaxation therapy • Brief psychological interventions • Antidepressant therapy with CBT • Psychiatric Referral • Electroconvulsive therapy

  7. Antidepressants • Common type works to maintain own mood stabiliser - serotonin • Delayed onset 2-3weeks • Often needed for 6-12months • Some people need them for life • Some need more than one course in life. • Everyone is different
