  3. What is mental illness? Mental illness, also called mental health disorders, refers to a wide range of mental health conditions —disorders that affect your mood, thinking and behavior. Examples of mental illness include depression, anxiety disorders, schizophrenia, eating disorders and addictive behaviors. 4. Why explore mental health & spirituality? • According to the National Alliance on Mentally Illness, one in five adults will experience a mental health crisis this year • Studies have shown people experiencing a mental health crisis often first turn to their faith leader (Pastor, Priest, Rabbi, etc.) and faith community for help • People find strength and healing in attending Mass, Eucharistic Adoration, prayer, Scripture, and more • The Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick is for everyone who is experiencing an illness • We are not a whole Church when we are missing members Department of Special Needs Ministries

  5. Jesus is in the boat with us during the storms… 35 On that day, when evening had come, he said to them, “Let us go across to the other side.” 36 And leaving the crowd behind, they took him with them in the boat, just as he was. Other boats were with him. 37 A great windstorm arose, and the waves beat into the boat, so that the boat was already being swamped. 38 But he was in the stern, asleep on the cushion; and they woke him up and said to him, “Teacher, do you not care that we are perishing?” 39 He woke up and rebuked the wind, and said to the sea, “Peace! Be still!” Then the wind ceased, and there was a dead calm. 40 He said to them, “Why are you afraid? Have you still no faith?” 41 And they were filled with great awe and said to one another, “Who then is this, that even the wind and the sea obey him?” Mark 4:35-41 NRSVCE Department of Special Needs Ministries

  8. How can we respond as a Catholic Church? • Reach out to people and their family members experiencing a mental health crisis • In the month of May (Mental Health Awareness Month) or October (Mental Illness Awareness Week), include intentions for those living with mental illness in the Prayers of the Faithful • If appropriate, bring Holy Communion to a person who may be hospitalized • Invite people to Anointing of the Sick service • For Clergy, recognize when additional help may be needed for the person • Consider hosting a NAMI program in your parish • We do not have to be experts to reach out!
