8.1 Notes: Compounds and Chemical Bonding
Chemical Formulas • A chemical formula uses atomic symbols and subscripts to tell you the precise number of each kind of atom in a compound. • Example: H2O Oxygen Hydrogen Subscript- 2 Hydrogen atoms
Chemical bonds • A chemical bondforms when atoms transfer or share electrons. • There are two types of chemical bonds: Ionic & Covalent.
Ionic Bonds • Ionic bonds are formed when electrons are TRANSFERRED from one atom to another. • They are typically formed between a metal and a nonmetal.
Covalent Bonds • Covalent bonds are formed when atoms SHARE electrons. • They are typically formed between 2 nonmetals.
Summary- Copy and Answer • 1. Describe the 2 types of bonds elements can form. Be specific. • 2. Compare and contrast Ionic and Covalent Bonding. • 3. Classify the following as ionic or covalent. • H + O - H + Cl • Mg + Br - Al + Cl • Li + O - O +O
