  2. What was serfdom? • Modified slavery • Enforced labor for protection and the right to work on leased fields • Working in the fields and various chores around a landowner’s estate

  3. Who Were the Serfs? • Formed the lowest social class of the feudal society • Worked the master’s land and paid him rent for their plots

  4. Serfdom Timeline • 13th century – serfdom started • End of 16th century – peasants were under complete control of the landowner • Middle of 17th century – serfdom was hereditary • In 1861, Alexander II issued the Emancipation Manifesto
