Sustainability Center Data Collection ET 494 Advisor: CrisKoutsougeras By: Vaughn Ferrara, Ra’NajawhanPoullard, and Deuel Vaughn
Intro • The sustainability center is all about making the campus more environmentally friendly. • They have many methods of accomplishing this. • Solar Panels • Photo Voltaic- Solar to energy • Solar thermal- Solar to heat water • Geothermal- heat transfer of water in pond • Wind power • Build system to collect this data
Purpose • Our goal is to use off-the-shelf technology to design a data communication system that can be used on the existing mechanical apparatus to facilitate the data collection and pertinent controls.
What equipment is currently being used • Power meter Acuvim II series • Solar panels • Non tracking Photo Voltaic • Tracking Photo Voltaic • Solar Thermal
Where are the solar panels located 2 Positions of solar panels around Southeastern Campus • Sustainability Center • Physical Plant (Tracking) • Kinesiology Building (Solar Thermal) • Biology Building (Solar Thermal) 1 3 4
Features of power meters • See real time data • Trend logging • Alarms • Waveform Capture • 3 Phase or single Phase
Technology • Non intrusive • CT sensor (Current Transformer) • Similar to Voltage transformer • There are two types of CT’s, a ring core and a split core
Networking • The Internet of Things Concept (IoT) • Wireless Sensor Networks (WSN) • Network of nodes that cooperatively sense and control theenvironment
Wireless Sensor Networks • Includes the following: • Sensor Nodes- gathers sensory information • Actuator Node- converts electrical control signals to physical actions • Gateway- Sends the data back and forth to the internet • Client- Gives users access to data
Things to look for in Network • Reliability • Real Time Capable • Energy Efficiency • Security
Done so far • Looked at what subsystems the Sustainability already has in place • What equipment is being currently used • Researched what options were available on today's market • Research networking concepts • Looked into what other business have done similar concepts • Narrowed down what meters to use
This Semester Deliverables: • Finish research on the remaining software and networking devices. • Designour own system that usesnewer and better technology. • Determine the efficiency of the system. • Determine how and where will we store the data. • Compare efficiency with current system at the Sustainability Center.
