Atomic Number - the number of protons in an element; In a neutral atom, the number of electrons is equal to the number of protons. Atomic Mass - the average mass of all the isotopes of an element. Chemical Symbol- an abbreviation of the element’s name. It contains one or two letters. First letter is always capitalized.
Atomic Mass Number – The total number of protons and neutrons in the nucleus of an atom. Round the atomic mass to the nearest whole number. The number of neutrons equals atomic mass number minus atomic number.
Isotopes - elements with the same number of protons, but DIFFERENT numbers of neutrons. • Examples include chlorine-37, • chlorine-35, carbon-14
Period - • A horizontal row on the periodic • table. • The periodic table has 7 periods. • The period number tells us how • many energy levels an atom has.
