  2. Introduction • Who are we? • Why are we here? • To find out how well we’re doing in communicating about opportunities for faculty to participate at the state level; • To find out some of the deterrents or barriers (real or perceived) for faculty to serve at the state level; and • To find out how we can increase opportunities for all faculty to serve at the state level.

  3. Who are you? • How many have served on your senate as an officer or a senator? • Have you served on a local campus governance or senate appointed committee? What types? • How many ASCCC events have you attend? • How many have served on an ASCCC committee or Chancellor’s Office task force or advisory?

  4. ASCCC Committees • Which of the following is not a committee of the ASCCC? • Curriculum • Basic Skills • Academic Affairs • Standards and Practices • All are committees of the ASCCC

  5. Committee, Task Forces, and Advisory Group Facts Which is false? To serve on a committee, task force or advisory group I need to: • pay for my own travel? • get permission from my college president? • attend all meetings in Northern CA at the Senate Office? • serve for only one year? • be a faculty member?

  6. Executive Committee Which one is true? To run for the Executive Committee, I need to: • be a local senate president? • be a full- or part-time faculty member? • be knowledgeable in curriculum? • get approval from my partner? • take leave from my campus?

  7. Bylaws Article IV Executive Committee • Section 2. Selection and TermAll candidates for election to the Executive Committee shall meet at least one of these criteria: 1) is a Delegate or a local senate president 2) has within the last three years immediately preceding the election been a local senate president or an Executive Committee member or officer or 3) has been nominated by a resolution of a Member Senate. The minutes of the meeting at which that resolution was adopted must be submitted to the Elections Committee chair with the nomination of the individual.

  8. Your Thoughts? • How many have thought about running for an Executive Committee position? • What are some reasons why faculty do not serve on a committee, task force, or advisory group? • Why don’t people run for the Executive Committee ? • How can the Executive Committee encourage more diverse faculty to volunteer?

  9. Discussion about Bylaws Change • Resolved, That the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges explore and, potentially propose a bylaws change that would expand the pool of faculty eligible to run for positions on the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges Executive Committee; and

  10. Resolved, That the Academic Senate for California Community Colleges investigate new methods to increase the pools of faculty seeking membership on committees, identifying ways to recruit all faculty and to address misperceptions that discourage faculty from seeking to serve at both the local and state levels.

  11. What we’re working on… • Ambassadors • Flex day activities • Elections change (resolution) • Aggressive recruitment • Change our name (thoughts?) • Other ideas you’d like to see us do?
