New Vocabulary • Power: made of two parts, a base and an exponent. • Base: the number you are multiplying by itself in a power. • Exponent: how many time you multiply the base to itself.
Vocabulary • Simplify: a numerical expression when you it with its single numerical value. • Evaluate: replacing each variable with a given number, then simplify the expression.

Order of Operations • Perform operations inside grouping symbols. Grouping symbols: parenthesis, brackets, absolute values, fraction bars • Simplify powers. • Multiply and divide left to right. • Add and subtract left to right.
Simplify • 17 – 36 / 4
What is the value of the following expressions for x = 3 and y = 5. • x + y2 – xy • (y – x) + 4(xy)
