This article provides an overview of the current status and milestones achieved by the Abilene Sponsored Education Group Participants (SEGPs) in the Internet2 K-20 Initiative. It discusses the goals, implementation process, and approved SEGPs, along with application snapshots and inquiries.

Raw HDTV/IP Testing • Packetized raw HDTV (1.5 Gbps) • ISIe, Tektronix, & UW project/DARPA support • Connectivity and testing support • P/NW & MAX GigaPoPs, Abilene and DARPA Supernet, Level(3) • DARPA PIs Meeting • January 2002 • SEA -> DC via Abilene • P/NW & MAX at ends 1.5 Gbps 2/7/2002
SEGP Fundamentals • How do SEGPs work? • SEGP status targeted at both developed and emerging state-based education networks • One or more Internet2 University Members in the same state act as sponsor(s) • Periodic SEGP progress updates to Abilene required • How are SEGPs implementing advanced applications? • Connectors take overall fiscal and operational responsibility for the SEGP • No direct UCAID relationship with the SEGP • Quarterly fractional utilization reports to Abilene required • Differentiate Member/Sponsored Participants and SEGPs • % (in/out) traffic and method of measurement 2/7/2002
SEGP Process • Sponsor(s) completes SEGP Application • SEGP Connector completes Abilene Connection Agreement Addendum • Connector submits SEGP routing information to UCAID at abilene@internet2.edu • UCAID reviews and approves routes and submits them to the Abilene NOC • Abilene NOC begins passing additional SEGP traffic on the network 2/7/2002
SEGP Milestones & Statistics • March 2001: Abilene SEGP program launched • April 2001: first state education network added to Abilene • August 2001: Internet2 K-20 Initiative inaugurated at Snowmass • 18 SEGPs approved to date • 3 applications imminent; 9 additional inquiries • Expect at least 25 SEGPs by end of 2002 • Tremendous growth! 2/7/2002

SEGP Application Snapshots • California • The Survivors of the Shoah Visual History Foundation (VHF) is a non-profit organization founded by Steven Spielberg, dedicated to videotaping and archiving interviews of Holocaust survivors all over the world. To date, more than 50,000 testimonies have been collected. This multimedia archive is currently being catalogued for use in museums and educational institutions throughout the world. 2/7/2002
