Background • Smoking (nicotine dependence) is a disease according to International Disease Coding System.Health care providers have the primary responsibility to quit smoking or prevent relapses in ex-smokers or non-smokers. • The patients should be questioned for their smoking history in all health care services. • Only asking smoking history by a physician, gives 3-5% abstinence rate for one year.   3. Aim We aimed to determine the patients’ smoking status and smoking related pulmonary diseases load in future in a tertiary referral chest hospital.

  4. Results and Method 156.153 patients were included into the study and were asked three questions by personnel who works at registration desk in the period of eight months (Between May and December 2007). • Do you smoke? • Did you smoke? • Never smoker?

  5. Results • 77.793(49.8)% patients were female and 78.360 (50.2%) were male.

  6. Results • 55.122 (35.3%) patients were smokers • 47.470 (30.4%) patients were ex-smokers • 53.561 (34.3%) patients were non smokers.

  7. Results • Smokers and ex-smokers who smoke greater than three years were 95% (97.462). • Smokers and ex-smokers who smoke greater than ten years were 82.5% (84.638).

Conclusion • The smoking habits of the patients who apply to Chest Hospital were similar to our country’s average percentages. • The most of them were smokers who smoke greater than 10 pack years. • This results showed that tertiary referral chest hospitals might face very important and growing smoking related pulmonary diseases load in near future.
