  8. Pilgrim’sProgress Part 3:Led Astray ByWorldly Wiseman

  9. Christian Meets Worldly Wiseman • His concern • Quickly get rid of your burden! • His criticism • Of Evangelist • Of the path • Of the Book • Steps For My Path

  10. Wiseman’s Advice • An easier way • “For the gate is wide and the way is easy that leads to destruction…” (Matt. 7:13) • Go to Mr. Legality! • Lives in the town of Morality • Has a good name and reputation • Is skilled in removing burdens • First house past the hill

  11. Christian’s Detour • He turns out of the way • He is scared of the hill • His burden feels heavier • He regrets following Wiseman’s advice

  12. A Rebuke and a Promise • What are you doing here, Christian? • Like drinking water from the toilet • You have begun to reject the counsel of the Most High • “But my righteous one shall live by faith, and if he shrinks back, my soul has no pleasure in him.” (Hebrews 10:38) • Christian’s cry • Evangelist’s promise • “…all sins will be forgiven the children of man” (Mark 3:28)

  13. Three Reasons to Hate Worldly Wiseman • He turned you aside from “the Way” • “For the gate is narrow and the way is hard that leads to life, and those who find it are few” (Matthew 7:14) • He made the Cross offensive to you • “For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake and the gospel’s will save it” (Mark 8:35) • He placed you on the path to death • “For all who rely on works of the law are under a curse…” (Galatians 3:10)

  14. The Lie of Legalism • Lie: • If I do enough good things… • Read my Bible • Serve in church • Obey my parents • …I can earn my salvation • Truth: • “No one will be declared righteous in his sight by observing the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of sin.” (Romans 3:20) • Steps For My Path Let me cheat you out of your salvation!

  15. Christian’s Repentance • Christian’s shame • Expected death for being misled by human wisdom • Christian’s plea • May my sin be forgiven? • Evangelist’s response • You have committed two evils • You have forsaken the Good Road • You have walked in forbidden paths • The man at the gate will receive you!

  16. Back To The Hard Path “He walked like one who was constantly treading on forbidden ground and could by no means consider himself safe until he once again got onto the road that he left in order to follow Mr. Worldly Wiseman’s advice.”
