The Power of Habit • Habits are formed because the brain is constantly looking for ways to save effort. The brain will try to make almost any routine into habit. • Habits are a three step process: • Cue – a trigger that tells your brain to go into automatic mode. • Routine – physical, mental, emotional sequence • Reward – physical or emotional • When a habit emerges, the brain stops fully participating in decision making.

“Aha Moment” • Habits • Cue – visual, place, time, an emotion, sequence of thoughts, or people • Routine – incredibly complex or very simple, habits related to emotions can be measured in milliseconds • Reward – elements that cause physical sensations or emotional payoffs such as feelings as joy or pride, or just “shutting down”. • Affirmations • Personal • Positive • Present • Emotion
Affirming Habits • After reading the paper every morning I enjoy creating my future through affirmations. • After creating my future every morning I love the feeling of achievement I get when I set my plan for the week. • After planning for the week I love the feeling of accomplishment I get when I finish my morning workout.
Affirming Habits • Whenever I get a menu I always look at the healthy options first. • I love greeting my family with a silent I love you. • Driving gives me the opportunity to slow down, relax, and enjoy the moment. • I satisfy my thirst for knowledge by reading every weekend. Always take the time to “soak in” the emotion whenever the routine is completed.
