Earth’s layers From the Outside In
CRUST Continental Crust is thicker and less dense than oceanic crust.
LITHOSPHERE The lithosphere is a hard solid layer that is broken into pieces called tectonic plates. The lithosphere is the same as the crust plus the upper part of the mantle.
ASTHENOSPHERE The asthenosphere is a soft solid layer. The tectonic plates made of lithosphere move around on this layer.
MESOSPHERE The mesosphere is the thickest layer.
OUTER CORE The outer core is a liquid layer.
INNER CORE The inner core is the dense, solid center of our planet. It spins inside the outer core.
