Colonists Relations with American Indians • English settlers called Metacomet King Philip • Colonists were afraid that Metacomet wanted to destroy them • Tensions finally erupted into King Philip’s War • The colonial militia—civilians serving as soldiers fought American Indian warriors
Colonists Relations with American Indians • Some Indians allied themselves with the colonists to fight Metacomet’s forces (because of trade) • Many American Indians trusted the French more than the English (French had small settlements and were not growing like the English settlements)
Conflicts with France • France and England wanted control over both Europe and North America • This caused a series of wars • After several wars the two countries were still competing for the Ohio Valley • The British colonists felt that the French were keeping them from expanding west
Conflicts with France • In 1754 seven colonies wanted to make a treaty with the powerful Iroquois League • Benjamin Franklin helped write the Albany Plan of Union—called for all colonies except Georgia to unite • The colonies did not want to give up their individual authority and plan was rejected
The French and Indian War • The British built a fort on the Ohio River that the French drove off and built Fort Duquesne on the site • George Washington a young British soldier was brought in to build a simply fort and was driven out and had a lot of casualties– killed, injured or captured
The French and Indian War • George II sent General Edward Braddock to command British forces in North America • He did not have knowledge frontier fighting and walked into an ambush on the way to Fort Duquesne
The French and Indian War • The turning point in the war came in 1759 when British General James Wolfe captured Quebec– the capital of New France– after that fighting continued but England won most of the important battles
The Treaty of Paris • In 1763, Great Britain and France signed the Treaty of Paris officially ending the war • Britain and France redrew the political map of North America • The treaty gave Canada to Britain and gained all French lands east of the Mississippi except for New Orleans • The treaty changed the balance of power in North America– Britain owned almost all land east of the Misssissippi River and Spain was now the only other European nation with lands in North America
