Looking to Jesus: • We will see how He ministered to people and why He ministered to them. • As we look to Jesus we can compare our “how” and “why” of ministry to His. • Ministry is meeting the needs of others whether the need be social, physical, and or spiritual.
Jesus Ministered From Compassion: • Today I would like us to think of the term “Compassion.” • How would you define the word? • What is compassion?
Expository Dictionary Article • The splanchnizomai word group is not used frequently in the NT. • The word originally indicated the inner parts of the body (from the guts) and came to suggest the seat of the emotions--particularly emotions of pity, compassion, and love.
Expository Dictionary Article • But its occurrences seem especially important. The noun is found in Lk 1:78; Ac 1:18 (in a physical sense); 2 Co 6:12; 7:15; Php 1:8; 2:1; Col 3:12; Phm 7, 12, 20; 1 Jn 3:17. Learning From Jesus • When Jesus' response if such that he is described as being moved by compassion, the occasion is often the turning point in someone's life. … • Compassion moved Jesus to take action that affected the lives of those whose needs moved him.
For Us: • God calls you and I to have compassion on othersand to participate in ministry. • That call is more than an appeal for us to feel with and for the needy (pity). • It is a call to care enough to become involved and to help by taking some action that will set others' lives on a fresh, new course.

Today’s Sermon: • Today’s sermon is a look at Matthew and the times in this gospel where Jesus is shown to have compassion. I want us to notice a progression. • He had compassion, • for what reasons, • and then what happened?
Matthew 9:35-38 Page 1510: • Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, preaching the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. 36 When he saw the crowds, he had compassion on them, because they were harassed and helpless, like sheep without a shepherd.
Matthew 9:35-38: • 37 Then he said to his disciples, "The harvest is plentiful but the workers are few. 38 Ask the Lord of the harvest, therefore, to send out workers into his harvest field."
Jesus Shows Compassion • Matthew 14:13-17 Page 1520 • Jesus heals and feeds the five thousand men (15,000 people?)
Matthew 15:29-34 Page 1522 • Jesus left there and went along the Sea of Galilee. Then he went up on a mountainside and sat down. 30 Great crowds came to him, bringing the lame, the blind, the crippled, the mute and many others, and laid them at his feet; and he healed them.
Matthew 15:29-34 Page 1522 • 31 The people were amazed when they saw the mute speaking, the crippled made well, the lame walking and the blind seeing. And they praised the God of Israel. • Then he feeds the 4000. • Matthew 20:29-34 Jesus heals two blind men.
The Impact • It is unfair and unrealistic to think that we can change the world with our compassion. It is even too much of a stretch to think that our compassion can change this whole community. But by acting in compassion we can make a change in an individual.
In Your Life: • Think of when people went out of their way to make sure that you were taken care of, physically, socially, and or spiritually. • Compassion is when people take the concern that they have for you and their love for God and put them into practice.
