Unit 5 Culture and Health Care Principles of Health Science Ms. Thieman Spring 2013
Engage Think of what kinds of medicines, home remedies, or other treatments you have used that were thought to help treat various ailments, illnesses, or injuries. Have you ever ate, drank, or avoided certain foods or drinks due to your cultural beliefs? Does your culture seek advice and/or treatment from alternative medicine professionals? What kinds? Do you personally believe in what your family cultural beliefs are? If not, how do you think that will affect the future cultural generations?
Cultural Overview • Culture: the act of belonging to a designated group. • Ethnicity: based on national origin or culture. • Race: based on physical or biological characteristics. • CulturalDiversity: differences based on cultural, ethnic, and racial factors. • Acculturation: learning cultural behaviors from others. • Assimilation: merging of cultural traits from different cultural groups.
Cultural Differences • Cultural differences can have an effect on healthcare. • Beliefs regarding preventive measures • Preferences in close touching and physical space • Communication • Beliefs regarding general procedures (ex. blood draws) • Dietary practice • Spiritual beliefs & views on death • Beliefs about medications • Beliefs about pregnancy and childbearing • Beliefs about pain
Cultural Barriers • Different views of terms: • Health- a state of complete physical, mental, and social wellbeing; not merely the absence of diseases. • Illness-abnormal functioning of a body’s system or systems. • May exist if the patient is: • Resistant to change • Uncooperative or argumentative • Overly agreeable • Noncompliant after multiple teaching attempts
Obstacles to Cultural Competence • Although cultural heritage and beliefs are always present, the health care provider must not allow obstacles to interfere with quality health care including: • Stereotyping • Prejudice • Discrimination • Many methods are available to help the provider to overcome cultural obstacles.
Overcoming Obstacles Explore personal beliefs and perceptions about different cultures. Learn as much as possible about the cultures represented locally. Always use the patient’s family name unless given permission to use first names only.
Overcoming Obstacles continued… Direct eye contact is viewed as important in American culture, but not necessarily within other cultures. Encourage patients to talk about illnesses and look for misunderstandings between cultural beliefs and current diagnosis. Look for confusion and fear, watch for cues and respond with compassion.
Overcoming Obstacles continued… Treat all patients with respect, concern, & compassion. Recognize other cultures are not as time sensitive as Americans. Many cultures are intensely involved with the supernatural and may believe that spirits or hexes cause illness.
