What is Risk? • Risk is the possibility of consequences involving mortality, morbidity, or injury to members of the public. • What risk do we take when we drive our vehicles?
How much risk is safe? • There is no situation in which there are no risks, but every situation should be as safe as possible. • Our government allows a 1 in 1,000,000 risk for things out of our control. For example: The chance of coming into contact with radioactive material. • Thing we can control are allowed a 1 in 10, 000 risk. For example: The chance of being poisoned by a pesticide.
Where is risk relevant for students? • Cosmetics • Detergents • Cell phones • Medications • Cleaning supplies • Pesticides • Herbicides • Transportation • EVERYWHERE!!!
Purpose • Enrichment for Chemistry and Biology curriculum. • Alert students of poisonous products in their environment. • Increase awareness of risks in everyday activities. • Enhance learning by using technology in labs.
Background Knowledge Chemistry: Chemical properties - those properties a substance possesses because of its action or lack of action with other substances. Reaction with an acid, or reaction with oxygen (combustion) are just a couple of examples of chemical properties.
Background Knowledge Biology: Cellular respiration - is the process of oxidizing food molecules, like glucose, to carbon dioxide and water. The energy released is trapped in the form of ATP for use by all the energy-consuming activities of the cell.
