  1. WRD 110 MWF 10-10:50 AM 212 Classroom Bldg. Instructor: Travis Martin

  2. What are we going to do today? • Discuss Homework • Writing with a sense of purpose • Satire • Colbert Report Discussion • Colbert’s Satire • Primary Purpose • Activity • Recap • Homework • Questions at the end…

  3. Homework What did you come up with? What are differences between hyperlinks and the traditional sources (books, articles, pictures, etc.) used in an essay? How do we use each differently? How do we judge credibility in both? What are the differences in language, approach, and style?

  4. Rhetorical Stance • E-Handbook Section 20 • Write with a sense of purpose! • Cicero says we write to • Entertain • Persuade • inform • We can do all of these things in the same essay. • How might two of the purposes be combined in your web-essays? • One example: Satire • Satire: noun 1. the use of irony, sarcasm, ridicule, or the like, in exposing, denouncing, or deriding vice , folly, etc. 2. a literary composition, in verse or prose…(Dictionary.com) • Let’s watch a video and discuss how effective it can be…

  5. Colbert’s Satire • Activity Prompt: The rhetorical act is also a balancing act. How balanced is Colbert? Watch the video and you will have 3-4 minutes to prepare answers to two of the questions on the following slide. Answer questions assigned to your side of the room. • Look for evidence of satire within Colbert’s delivery: • Irony • Sarcasm • Ridicule • exposing, denouncing, or deriding vice, folly, etc. • What works and what doesn’t work in his rhetorical style?

  6. Wednesday October 26, 2011 Whales Aren't PeoplePETA files a lawsuit claiming that whale performers have Constitutional rights. http://www.colbertnation.com/the-colbert-report-videos/400777/october-26-2011/whales-aren-t-people

  7. Take 3-4 Minutes to answer two of the questions • Answer two of the questions for your side of the room… • Left side: • Where does humor detract from the message? • Do any of the jokes seem offensive? • If not offensive to you, could any of the material be offensive to others? • Does PETA’s the cause get undermined at any point? (explain how) • Right side: • Where does humor enhance the message? • Describe how Colbert sneaks serious messages into the discussion using humor. • Why do you think Colbert and Jon Stewart are two of the “most trusted” sources of news today? • What is it about satire that appeals to younger demographics?

  8. Satire • Colbert is • Entertaining (humor) • Persuading (uses PETA to make a point about how corporations are considered people) • Informing (teaches us about the issue concerning the whales) • But what is his primary purpose? • To entertain (and that has been how “official” news outlets have discredited him) • Did anyone watch the live show at the capital? http://articles.cnn.com/2010-10-30/politics/stewart.colbert.rally_1_stewart-and-colbert-star-studded-rally-cat-stevens?_s=PM:POLITICS

  9. Primary purpose • The “Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear” changed its primary approach from entertainment to persuasion. Take my word for it: “The two comedians tried to encourage bipartisanship in politics while decrying the climate of fear that has shaped national sentiments.” —or— • Take CNN’s word for it: “Amidst all the hilarity, however, the ‘Rally to Restore Sanity and/or Fear’ carried a message about Americans turning their backs on hate and working together to make the world a better place” (CNN 2). • Their purpose shifted, in the one event at least, from entertaining to persuading. While both rhetorical stances were used, the primary purpose changed. • You can use different stances in your essays. But you will have to maintain one primary purpose

  10. Activity • Get with your research partner. • Write down your topic for Project 2 • (4 minutes) • Write down your primary purpose • Describe why you want to describe, inform, or entertain in one paragraph • (4 minutes) • Write down the two remaining purposes • How could you use these techniques in your web-essay? • (2 minutes each) • Explain your approach to your partner verbally.

  11. Recap • Discussed some differences between traditional sources and hypertext/hyperlinks • Writing with a purpose • Entertain • Persuade • Inform • Stephen Colbert • Satire Discussion • Primary Purpose Activity

  12. Homework • Homework: • Start Drafting Web Essay (reviewing rubric on Wednesday) • Review: • http://www.nps.gov/history/nr/travel/civilrights/ • http://www.seeblue.com • http://www.uky.edu
