MEDLINE • MEDLINE is the United States National Library of Medicine’s bibliographic database in fields such as Medicine, Nursing, Allied health, Pre-clinical sciences etc. • It contains over 13 million citations to journal articles, including reviews and clinical trials • 4,600 biomedical journals published in the United States and in 70 other countries • Dating back to 1950, with daily updates

  3. MEDLINE • Records are indexed with MeSH headings • MeSH terms provide a consistent way of retrieving information that uses different terminology for the same concept. • Abstracts are included for more than 75% of the records

  5. Advantages of OVID Web Gateway • Guided through selections for a precise search based on MeSH headings and limits • Links to full-text collections subscribed by OULS • Same interface as other medical databases

  7. Disadvantages of OVID Web Gateway • Best results obtained by separate entry of search concepts and using the “Combine Searches” feature • Users might find frustrating to have to examine the search closely in order to select relevant subject headings

Features of OVID Web Gateway • Searching • - Map Term to Subject Heading: Mapping finds relevant • subject headings • - Combine searches: Uses Boolean operators to combine • the results of search statements • - Limits: Restricts results to language, age groups, year of • publication, etc. • - Find citation: Useful for checking a faulty or incomplete • reference • Locating full-text articles: Follow the link “Tour Oxford Full Text” to check electronic availability

Features of OVID Web Gateway • Viewing results: By selecting fields and clicking the Display button • Printing, Emailing and Saving: The Results Manager is located at the end of every Results display page • Export to RefWorks or other personal bibliographic management software • Setting AutoAlerts to favourite data sets
