Explaining the LOR Definition, components, and benefits 3
What is the Learning Object Repository? • An online library for storing, managing, and sharing your learning resources (learning objects) • Learning objects can be tagged with metadata to classify, organize, and make them easily searchable for others • Repositories can exist for the institution and for individual schools or departments, private and public 4
What goes in the LOR? A learning object can be a quiz, a presentation, an image, a video, or any other kind of document or file you use to create course content and learning materials for online learning. 5
Search using metadata Browse by publisher or course 7
Benefits of LOR • Efficient workflow • Improved course maintenance • Centralized information • Scalability • Customizability • Allows for diverse delivery modalities 8
Roles & Proper Use What instructors and course developers can do in the LOR 9
Using the LOR Add Delete/Overwrite Publish Add learning objects into course shells from repositories Delete learning objects in a repository, edit (overwrite) content in a repository Upload learning objects to a repository Static vs. dynamic links 10
Structure & setup (CCOL) Common course elements are managed in LOR Learning Objects are dynamically linked to the newest version Course shells are populated and provided to facilitators by the CCOL Design Team 12
Recommendations for rollout Set expectations Create guidelines Adjust permissions Aligned with AA42 policy, clearly explain proper use of the LOR and what it can and cannot do for instructors and course designers. Implement a policy regulating what should be put into the LOR i.e. no graded assignments, personal information, etc. Revise instructor roles & permissions to facilitate effective use of the LOR. Discuss permissions across program repositories. Pilot at program level Build & maintain repositories for each program Prior to institutional rollout, implement a program-level pilot project to explore faculty experience and benefits of LOR course management and scalability. Create dedicated space for each school to house content common across multiple classes or instructors. 13

Competency-based education Click to download Brightspace CBE eBook Success is about the knowledge gained, not the time spent. When a student masters a concept, they move on to the next. Until they master it, they receive specific guidance to help them. (D2L) Brightspace has many tools at the Instructional Design level that can facilitate the effective implementation of CBE: Intelligent Agents, Learning Objectives and Competencies, and LOR. 15
“Ultimately, a competency framework needs to realize the primary objective of student learning. Educators need to define what those statements of learning are going to be, which courses are required to address those learning objectives and outcomes, and structure the competency framework and curriculum accordingly.” 16
Implementing CBE Learning Differently Teaching Differently Adapting Infrastructure New demographic of students who have initiative, are self- directed, mature, and balance many priorities Top-to-bottom overhaul of course material with a focus on learning objectives and competencies, rethinking approach to education Updates to compensation models, instructor roles, tools, technology, and course design 17
Futures for CBE at Algonquin • Academic upgrading • Online graduate certificate programs • Employer partnerships to develop competency frameworks • Brightspace resources and tools 19
