FIGURATIVE LANGUAGE • Language that uses words or expressions to convey something other than the literal meaning! • Literal language vs. Figurative language • Literally: “It’s raining really hard.” • Figuratively: “It’s raining cats and dogs!” • Figurative language is a way to describe something in a creative way

  3. SIMILE • A comparison of unlike things using “like” or “as” • Ex. The baby was as light as a feather. • Ex. My cat’s fur is like velvet.

  4. METAPHOR • Comparing two things without using “like” or “as” • Ex. Jack has the heart of a lion. • Ex. Life is a rollercoaster.

  5. PERSONIFICATION • Something having human characteristics or qualities • Ex. Lightning danced across the sky

  6. ALLITERATION • The repetition of the beginning sound in a series of words • Ex. Sally sells seashells down by the seashore.

  7. HYPERBOLE • An exaggerated statement not meant to be taken literally • Ex. “I have a mountain of homework.”

  9. IDIOM • An expression or phrase that has a meaning that shouldn’t be taken literally • They are confusing! • Often the words in a group make no sense! Don’t analyze them literally. Use context clues. • Ex. You never sit still. You must have ants in your pants. • Ex. Jackson dove off the dock just as it collapsed and escaped injury by the skin of his teeth.

  10. CONNOTATION & DENOTATION • Denotation- refers to the literal meaning of the word (the definition) • Connotation- the emotional and imaginative association surrounding a word • Ex. Hollywood • Denotation (definition): • a part of Los Angeles, CA; the center of the American motion-picture industry • Connotation: • What do you think of when you hear the word ‘Hollywood’? • Glamour, money, celebrities, stardom

  11. CONNOTATION & DENOTATION • In the comedy movie Liar Liar, the main character, Fletcher, is unable to tell a lie for 24 hours after his son’s birthday wish comes true.
