  2. Who is Ms. Anderson? • Graduated with a Master’s in Early Childhood Education • 8th year teaching at Sycamore Elementary • 12 years in kindergarten & 8 years in first grade. • Two daughters –Rachael 13 & Rylee 10 • and…the sweetest puppy –Lilly 

  3. A newsletter will be sent home every Monday that will communicate our weekly focus for each subject area.

  4. Homework activity board will be sent home • every Monday. • Homework will be due every Friday. -will be a review or extension of class work -should take only a few minutes each night -child’s responsibility with adult assistance -may include reading, writing, and math skills *Wednesday is a homework FREE night!

  5. Will your child have a birthday at school? • Due to school policy, no editable treats are allowed to be sent in at any time. • You can have your child pass out invitations as long as they are either for ALL girls, ALL boys, or ALL students.

  6. Our lunch time is 11:20 – 11:50 Cafeteria Visitors In order to help us begin another great year, students may receive lunch guests after Labor Day.  Guests will need to sign in and out in the front office.  Please refer to the student handbook for more information. 

  7. When your child is absent from school, the parent MUST WRITE A NOTE, which gives the date absent and the reason for the absence. Please be sure to include the teacher's name on the note. If a note is not received, the absence is recorded as unexcused.

  8. SyCamoreROARin’ Behavior • Responsible • Organized • Accountable • Respectful • All students are expected to show ROARin’ behavior. Those that are ROARin’ lions will be rewarded with an extra ROARin’ recess time every other week.

  9. Weekly Conduct Please check your child’s daily conduct in his or her agenda book nightly. Your child’s daily conduct will be averaged weekly, and that grade will be entered into Power School. Excellent - E Satisfactory - S Needs Improvement - N

  10. A= 93-100 B= 85-92 C=75-84 D=70-74 F= below 70 Science and S.S. S or N only *Papers will be sent home on Wednesday. Please sign and return to school. Math and Reading only!

  11. Medications • Must be dispensed from office only with completed form on file • Includes cough drops/ creams • Inform teacher of allergies • Please do not send your child to school if he or she is ill! • Please email or write me a note to let myself and Mrs. Benton know why your child was out that day(s). • Dress Code • (Please see Sycamore Handbook for dress code) • *Pants- worn at the waist and must be appropriately sized and at a safe length. • *Head apparel (hoods, hats, etc.), except for religious or medical reasons, must not be worn inside the school building. • *Footwear is required and must be safe and appropriate for indoor or outdoor physical activity. • *Clothing or accessories must not display offensive, vulgar language or images and must not advertise products which students may not legally purchase.

  12. We are always happy to have classroom helpers. Please fill out the “volunteer sheet” on your child’s desk so we know what you are interested in doing. Visitors must be on Mrs. Shive’s list in the front office prior to being allowed in the classroom.

  13. Students are expected to take their RedTake-Home Folder and their agenda book home each night and bring them back to school daily. Your child’s agenda book should be signed daily.

  14. READING Reading Reading is an important part of first grade. Make sure your child is reading every night at home. Reading aloud to your child counts too. *See handout in packet

  15. PHONICS, GRAMMAR, & WRITING We will have a weekly phonics/writing test with about 10 words and a couple of sentences. Our phonics tests will be skill-based not just memorization of the words on the week’s newsletter. Each child will be learning about nouns, verbs, adjectives, capital letters, punctuation, complete sentences, and so much more.

  17. SCIENCE & SOCIAL STUDIES Science and Social Studies Science and Social Studies will be integrated with language arts this year. We value the science and social studies content areas and these areas will be addressed through literacy efforts. What will this look like? In first grade we will explore complex informational texts followed by meaningful discussions and extension activities through literacy. Grading: S, N
