5. Building Background The riots that occurred in LA in 1992 took place because a jury found four Caucasian police officers innocent of beating an African-American motorist, Rodney King.
The major evidence in the case was a videotape that allegedly showed the officers beating the man.
After the verdict was returned, many African-Americans stormed the streets in protest, destroying the part of LA described in the article.
