  2. The 1972 Olympics • Munich, Germany • Germans were going for a lighthearted, friendly atmosphere • Security was lax • Israeli team was concerned about safety

Black September • 8 men in tracksuits carrying duffel bags climbed over the fence and broke into the apartments using stolen keys. • Killed 2 and took 9 hostage • Kidnappers were “Black September” faction of the Palestinian Liberation Organization • Their demands: release 234 mostly Palestinian political prisoners and two German terrorists. • Israeli response: no negotiation • https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G7-WvfWXn7U&list=RDG7-WvfWXn7U • (to 4:37)

  4. The rescue attempt • Demanded a plane to the Middle East • Police tried to ambush them as they boarded the plane but made several mistakes, causing a gun battle • In desperation, the terrorists shot the hostages • Most of the terrorists were shot dead by police

  5. Aftermath • Sept 8- Israel bombs 10 PLO bases in Syria and Lebanon. Up to 200 people are killed. • Oct 29- Lufthansa flight 615 hijacked. 3 living terrorists released and celebrated when they arrive in Libya • Many European countries develop specialized counter-terrorism units

  6. Operation Wrath of God • Israel sent the Mossad to track down the three released terrorists. • two of the three killed; one in hiding in North Africa • 25-30 more names on the list • Operation Spring of Youth • Commando units hit two more PLO bases • Many more assassinations attributed to these Ops. over the next 25 years.
