What Do You Know about the California Missions?
Driving Question How can we choose a good location and design for a new California mission?
What Do We Need to Know? • What is a mission? • Where is Alta California? • Why were missions built? What were they used for? • What are the “historic goals” in California? • Why is this “urgent”? • Where are the other missions located? • What buildings are in a mission? • What does a mission look like?
Project Details You will work on your own and in a team. • Research • Location and map • Design and layout • Persuasive letter • Presentation
Step One • Research California Mission history. • Find answers to our “Need to Know” questions.
Reasons for Missions • To establish ownership of Northern California • To convert the native people of the area to Christianity • To discourage Russian, American and English colonization • To expand the Spanish Empire • To provide fresh provisions for the Manila galleons (proved a port)
Step Two • Research the geographical needs of a mission. • Complete “What’s a Good Place?” • Due Friday, December 14.
Revisit Driving Question How can we choose a good location and design for a new California mission?
Step Three • Create a large GROUP map to show the location of your mission. Include: Mountains, rivers, lakes Compass rose Location of all missions Presidios Color • Write a paragraph explaining why you chose that location. • Due Thursday, December 20.
Step Four • Research mission architecture and layouts. • Each student makes two sketches: • a church façade of your mission • a floor plan of the buildings and grounds. • Due January 9.
Step Five • Combine all team members’ sketches to create one floor plan and one church façade sketch of your mission. • Due January 11. • Optional: Create a model of your mission.
Step Six • EACH student writes a persuasive letter to the Archbishop. Use the Planning Notes page to guide the content of your letter. • Planning Notes due Jan. 18.
Step Seven • Combine each team member’s planning notes to create ONE group planning sheet. • Meet to discuss, prepare, and practice oral presentation. • Presentation to Archbishop Fonte on January 24.
Presentation Requirements • Should last 5 – 8 minutes • Each member is responsible for part of the presentation. • Each member should be able to answer questions from the Archbishop or his assistants.
