  1. Importance of IP Address

  2. Internet has become an essential commodity in modern day life where, in day to day life, it is becoming more and more penetrative in different aspects. • But with so many users, it would have created a chaos. Hence to simplify the process, a protocol was standardized which today we know as INTERNET PROTOCOL (IP). • In this protocol, each and every networking components (not only computers) is designed to have an address (though this address may be shared by group of devices) which is required to connect and communicate to other devices be it locally or globally.

  3. This address is call INTERNET PROTOCOL ADDRESS or simply IP address which comes as two variants IPV4 (which is almost exhausted) and IPV6 (newer).

  4. Now, why we need it? • Firstly, it can be regarded as a unique identification to a device (though definition will change if this same address is shared by others also e.g. As in some educational institutions). • It makes it easier to track. This is perhaps the basic aspect of importance of IP address at its simplest.

  5. But this doesn’t end here. • The public ip address is also used by DNS servers or network gateways to communicate. • A simple example, is when we try to reach Google, or Facebook, we type the web address in the browser. • But, instead of typing it, we can directly address IP of their server to access the same page.

  6. Facebook uses multiple different ips of which, one is 157.240.3.35 so instead of writing the address, if you type the address (this or any other that Facebook uses) you can access the same main page! • Which brings us to next aspect - BLOCKING. There’ll be times when shady people tries to harm the system via different techniques to crippled the Internet.

  7. Though it’s not a perfect/absolute measure, blocking the ip(s) on firewall level can decrease the load on the server resulting speed delivery to the genuine visitors. • A related field is IP geo-location. Since IANA (INTERNET ASSIGNED NUMBERS AUTHORITY), provides IP ranges to different organizations such as ISPs, it is possible to track the IP for geo-locations (though it can be spoofed by proxy servers but still in practice).

  8. If you will type whats my IP address in Google, then it’ll show your public IP along with other information such as what Internet service provider you are using, from which country/state along with other technical information. • Then comes the diagnostic features. Different networking devices communicate each other through what we call “packet of data”.

  9. THANKS • If we “ping” the IP address of the device, and receive a response, then it’s an indication that the communication is made. • As said earlier, not only computers but also other networking devices also can be addressed via IP address, it makes it possible to address the devices.
