There are 4 Modes of Writing • Persuasive • Informative • Entertain • Descriptive
Purpose • To change the reader’s mind or attitude • To influence the reader’s thinking • To prompt the reader to do something
To convince the reader to accept the writer’s position or opinionTo take a clear standon something and stick with it
Make your opinion STRONG by backing it up with strong facts.
Purpose • AKA Technical and Expository • To inform • To explain an issue, a situation, or point of view • To share facts about a particular subject
Explains something to the reader • History books and science books and math books contain expository writing
AKA: Narrative • Tells a story • Uses characters, dialogue • Conflict (problem, mystery, question) • Has a plot with a climax and resolution • Beginning • Middle • End
Descriptive Writing • Describes in great detail • Appeal to the reader’s five senses • Taste • Smell • Touch • Sight • Hearing
Descriptive Writing tells about the characteristics of a person, place, or thing tells about the features of a subject, event, or process
To create a picture in the mind of the readerTo give the reader a strong sense of “being there” or “seeing it”
